Vitamins – But I thought they were good for me!

supplements

With the way I eat, I miss out on a lot of good vitamins and minerals.  So, of course, people suggest supplements.  Here’s the problem with that.  Have you ever read what goes into those vitamins you’re consuming?  Well, I’ve had to read labels for EVERYTHING, so naturally, I read these.   Here’s an example I took a picture of yesterday:

It may be difficult to read, but one of the ingredients is corn starch!  For gluten-free folks, that works just fine, but for anyone with a sensitivity to corn, it’d be a “no-no”.  Just as sugar is slipped into all sorts of foods (and even supplements!), manufacturers slip corn products in.  It can be VERY discouraging when looking for vitamins to help supplement my food intake.  Here’s what I’ve found:

For the record, I am not a Juice Plus distributor, but I do take the Orchard blend to help supplement my fruit intake.  However, I can’t take the Green version because it has oat bran and other things in it.

Yesterday, I scoured the shelves at Costco and Smith’s looking for a Calcium supplement that didn’t contain soy or corn.  No luck.  😦  Today (being a new day..), I tried Whole Foods, and found one that should do the trick.  It’s from a company called Country Life.  They have a website: http://country-life.com/

Because I was getting super low on my other calcium pills, and unable to find them locally, I bought the Country Life brand, but being Scottish, ( 😉 ) I’ll continue my search for comparable, yet inexpensive versions and update this as I find them.

Before I began this journey I never read anything on a label, it wasn’t important.  Now, I read EVERYTHING, and have been SO surprised by things companies throw into their products.  Why do they flood us with non-essential ingredients?  Boggles the mind.

The way I think, I figure they should start with the most restrictive eater, accommodate them, and the product will be good for EVERYONE!  Just my opinion, but I believe it can be done.

Please feel free to weigh in on any great supplements you find or know of that would work for other “sensitive eaters” like me.  I’d love to hear from you!
